1984 O'Brien tells Winston that before man there was nothing and after man, if he could come to an end, there will still be nothing. So according to O'Brien, if there is no man in the forest, there is no tree. But what if a woman was in the forest? Or a child?

Aha! As a child I used this same rationale with the 10 Commandments. It seemed to me that when it came to things like envy and adultry, there were a lot of rules for the guys that I wouldn't have to follow as a woman! (Of course there were other Old Testament rules for women which weren't very appealing. Not that I followed those either!) Being rendered invisble by sexism has its advantages!
